KAUAI'S MOST DELICIOUS DOUGHNUTS HIT HONOLULU

Kauai-based Holey Grail Donuts has garnered a cult-following at their Hanalei outpost. Now, Oahu residents and visitors can reap the benefits of these freshly fried treats at their new spot in Ward Village.

For now, they’re operating out of a sunny yellow food truck, but some time towards the end of 2020, they’ll be slinging the plant-based doughnuts out of an 1,800 square-foot space in the Ae'o building by Whole Foods.

To be clear, these are not just any doughnuts, they’re taro-based, fried in organic coconut oil and doctored up with rotating flavor combinations such as maple, smoked coconut and Hawaiian sea salt; vanilla bean glaze, cacao nibs and a cherry drizzle; and local wildflower honey and flakey sea-salt, to name just a few.

Nile and Hana Dreiling—the brother-sister duo at the helm of Holey Grail—are not only culinarily creative, they’re focused on sustainability and are community-minded. They give back by dough-nating (ha!) to various organizations across the state. They also use compostable, biodegradable boxes and almost always source ingredients locally, highlighting wild-foraged fruits and supporting local farmers. In fact, the base of the dough uses taro (that’s then pounded into poi) from Kealia Farms in Kapa’a.

Almost everything they do is over-the-top, in the best and most thoughtful way. Aside from the doughnuts, the homemade craft beverages are plant-based perfection. Think Holy Chocolate Mylk, a blend of cashew, coconut, cacao, maple and sea salt; Holy Chai, featuring black tea herbs and spices and nitro-infused coconut cashew milk; and a draft coffee and latte using a custom blend of beans.

This weekend ritual is one you won’t want to miss out on. Maybe we’ll see you in line.
